Not every signal should be harvested

The AI Act’s unacceptable-risk list includes practices such as harmful manipulation, social scoring, untargeted scraping for facial recognition databases, and certain biometric uses. It is a reminder that the future of AI is not only a question of capability. It is a question of what societies are willing to normalize.

Workplace emotion recognition sits at the uncomfortable intersection of surveillance and pseudointimacy. It suggests that a system can read how someone feels, and that the institution has a legitimate reason to know.

That idea deserves resistance even before accuracy enters the conversation. A tool that guesses emotion badly is dangerous. A tool that guesses emotion persuasively may be worse, because it can turn ambiguity into an HR artifact with a confidence score attached.

People should not have to perform emotional legibility for software in order to keep their jobs, receive instruction, or avoid suspicion. Some parts of human life deserve friction.
